Most of Puerto Rico has been in the dark for 21 days since Hurricane Maria

The death toll in Puerto Rico has climbed to 45 in the weeks since Hurricane Maria tore across the island, authorities said.

Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to hit the island in 90 years, pummeled Puerto Rico with 150 mph winds, uprooting trees and knocking out power in its path of destruction. There are at least 19,000 federal, civilian and military personnel assisting in clean-up on the ground.

More than half of Puerto Ricans remain with electricity and a third of residents are still without water, prompting some to turn to local streams and other bodies of water to relieve their thirst. As a result, four deaths are being investigated as possible cases of leptospirosis — a disease spread by drinking water contaminated by animal urine.
